Mulberry rises 17% as consumers snap up its luxury handbags

Blog home Mulberry rises 17% as consumers snap up its luxury handbags (1)Tweet this Comments (2) Shares in luxury fashion firm Mulberry are in style today after the company said full year sales and profits would beat expectations. Consumers may be worried about spending cuts and the gloomy economic outlook, but that has not stopped them splashing out on Mulberry's trademark leather handbags. The company said sales over the past ten weeks had been stronger than expected, up 57% in its UK shops. It is also selling more products at full price, improving its margins, while it had very little stock left for the summer sale, so mark downs were reduced. Wholesale orders for the autumn season are expected to double, while spring 2011 is also looking good. But, proving it is not completely resistent to the current climate, it cautioned that second half results would be sensitive to Christmas trading and the reaction to the VAT increase due in January. Overall though, with the strong first half, it said the result for the year to March 2011 was expected to "significantly exceed market expectations." So the shares have climbed 67.5p to 465p, a 17% increase, making them one of the day's biggest risers

Get organized: Taming the overstuffed purse

Dear hideous handbag: I have a girlfriend whose handbag is the size of Rhode Island — on steroids! When I asked why she carried a year’s supply of cosmetics, not to mention a large jewelry roll; full set of rollers and an assortment of hair brushes, combs and perfumes in her bag, she answered: “My purse is my salvation. I live my life as a gypsy, never knowing where I’ll be and what I might need.” Big, slouchy bags are just that: cumbersome and shapeless. Look for a light-weight, small to medium-sized bag that has a defined “shape” and a light-colored lining, making it easy to find things. Remember, less really is more. Avoid purses with too many compartments. All you need is one inside zippered compartment and a cell phone pocket. Opt for bags with secure top closures. Trust me, people will sneak a peek to check out what’s inside your purse. They’ll remember an unkempt, dirty handbag just as easily as they will a clean and organized bag. Following is a list of hints to help you organize your handbag: I.C.E. card: If you do nothing else, create an In Case of Emergency Card and carry it with you at ALL times. I suggest using the following template and filling-in your personal information. “My name is xxxx. In case of emergency (I.C.E.), call: name/home, work and mobile telephone numbers. I have a dog (or other pet) named xxxx. For entry into my home to reach them, contact xxxx. Do not take xxxx to an animal shelter of any kind; contact my vet: Dr. xxxx/ number.” If you have an Advance Medical Directive on file, add the following information to your I.C.E. card: “I have an Advance Medical Directive on file with my lawyer, name/telephone number who should be contacted in case of an emergency. A copy is also on file with xxxx/number who has durable power of attorney should anything happen to me.” Paper money: Ask any bank teller and they’ll tell you the secret to keeping track of your money is to keep your bills flat and in numerical order, starting with the $1s and going backward: $5s, $10s, $20s and so on. Some people also hide an “emergency $50” in the deep crevices of their wallet — to be used in case of emergency only. Credit/debit cards: Limit the number of cards you carry and be sure to make a copy (front and back) of EVERY single card in your wallet; making note of the emergency 24-hour contact numbers. Keep this list in a safe place. If your wallet is lost or stolen, you’re good to go. Receipts: Empty your handbag EVERY night and put all receipts into a separate envelope. Save credit/debit card receipts long enough to check against your monthly statements, then shred them; cash receipts do not have to be saved. If you purchased something and want to return it, staple the receipt to the price tag of that particular item. Insurance/miscellaneous cards: Keep copies of current automobile and health insurance cards in your wallet, as well as a copy of your prescription card and eyeglass/contact lenses prescription (I learned the hard way). Enter frequent flyer account numbers into your phone and leave the cards at home. Checkbooks: Puleeeese! Have you seen the television commercial where the guy is writing a check for three items in the express line at the grocery store? Use a debit or ATM card and leave your checks at home. Change: Loose change is messy; it will ruin your wallet and weighs you down. Get an old-fashioned piggy-bank and dump the change from your purse into it every night. You’ll be surprised how quickly it adds up. You can save a few quarters for the vending machine if you need them at work. Gift cards: Put all gift cards and dining cards, etc., into a smaller, easily identifiable, change purse-sized pouch, then make a point of getting rid of the pesky things as soon as possible. Eyeglasses: To protect your glasses, the best case is a hard case. Finally, after each use, empty your bag and clean it with a damp cloth. Protect handbags by stuffing them with tissue and if possible, cover with dustcovers; store separately on shelves or hang from hooks rather than piling them, one on top of another. We invite you to send us questions about how to get and stay organized, which will be addressed in future columns.

Cocktails, handbags and a cause make for a good time

Next Page1| 2Previous PageThe Downtown Diva often marvels at how some of our most popular fundraising events seem to grow and evolve over the years. I've recently received some news about the upcoming eighth annual Handbag Happy Hour to benefit Island Coast AIDS Network (ICAN), and it got me thinking about the very first one back in 2003. The idea was to collect new and gently used handbags - all donated, of course - for an auction. The majority of the purses would go in the silent auction and a few of the more high-end bags would be auctioned off live - then mix it all up with a downtown venue (the small dining room of the former Harold's on Bay) and hope for the best. Who would have guessed that a first-time event would be such a rage? I remember women crowding the sidewalk, clamoring to get in - and I learned to never underestimate the allure of cocktails, handbags and a good cause. In the years that followed, HHH expanded to a series of bigger venues - and this year, the soiree moves to the posh Miromar Design Center. According to ICAN Director of Development Mitch Haley, ladies will be able to peruse at least 400 fabulous handbags, while they nosh, sip, mix, and mingle. Mitch also tells me that several stars have donated their own purses including Gwyneth Paltrow, Reba McEntire and Kim Basinger. The main event happens Friday, Nov. 5 from 5 to 9 p.m. with Kellie Burns and Doug Molloy sharing emcee duties. Look for lots more info at icanswfl.org. Handbag Happy Hour, you've come a long way, baby. Girls night out Another female-oriented fundraising event that's growing by leaps and bounds is Girls Night Out to benefit Blessings in a Backpack. The inaugural event last year drew a great crowd of gals to Harley-Davidson of Fort Myers, but this year's event on Sept. 30 was even bigger and better with raffle items, swag bags, yummy food and a nonstop flow of wine and fun.

Victoria Beckham Carries Handbags of Her Own Design

Yesterday at London's Heathrow Airport, we spotted (and wished for a better glimpse of) Victoria Beckham carrying a nude leather, multi-compartment envelope clutch tucked beneath her arm. And today—well what do you know?!—Posh is carrying the same bag in black! Turns out, the nude and two-tone clutches with gold buckle closure hail from Victoria Beckhams's own debut collection of handbags. The line of bags debuted at New York Fashion Week last month and respresent a collaboration with accessories maven Katie Hillier. Whether day or night or on the go, Victoria Beckham has perfectly posh style. She tends toward very feminine silhouettes, either of her own design or by friends like Marc Jacobs and Roland Mouret.

Oprah book club spurs NC woman to design handbag

RALEIGH, N.C. -- This is a story about a woman and a coveted handbag, but unlike most other stories about women and coveted handbags, Gigi Karmous-Edwards designed hers. Her Uvo (pronounced You-vo) is a luxury bag, made of exotic leathers in an eye-catching shape. Uvo comes from the Italian word for egg, meant to evoke life, rebirth and renewal, themes that resonate in Karmous-Edwards' story. And it came about, in a way, because of Oprah. Karmous-Edwards has always liked style. "I love the complete creativity fashion offers," she says. She even remembers the outfit her stylish mom put her in when their family emigrated from Egypt in 1968: A pale pink suit, navy blue and pink striped turtleneck and matching stockings. She liked math, physics and chemistry, too, and because she grew up with parents who were in engineering, that's the direction her career took. Yet her desire for flair didn't wane. After she got her degree in chemical engineering from N.C. State, she interviewed with chemical companies. "They wanted me in process engineering, but that would mean wearing a hard hat. So I went to grad school so I could keep my style." She and childhood friend Manal Afify got master's degrees in electrical engineering, and Karmous-Edwards' focus became global optical networks. "The best thing about being a woman in a predominantly male field is it pushes you harder, it forces you to be better." But that environment can also get wearying. She was ready for a change. Karmous-Edwards and Afify started a book club inspired by Oprah Winfrey, and the club took a spiritual turn when, in early 2008, Winfrey began focusing on Eckhart Tolle's work "A New Earth." The women thought more about creating their own destinies and what that would look like. Along the way, they did a vision board, a poster board with a collage of the things they envisioned in their lives. Karmous-Edwards put up a handbag.

Valentino handbags Paris Fashion Week spring summer 2011

Valentino sent his ready to wear collection for spring and summer 2011 down the Paris Fashion Week runway earlier today and it was a mix of classic silhouettes, ladylike details and an extensive handbag collection. In the past few seasons, Valentino has created floral based handbags with multiple flowers made from leather adorning the handbag or one large flower as a focal point. Valentino's handbags in the past few seasons have been structured, classic lady bags as well as softer, floral totes. For spring and summer 2011, Valentino has moved away from the designs of the past few seasons and into new handbag design territory. Valentino created multiple shoulder bags for his Paris Fashion Week runway which were shown in small and medium sizes. The shoulder bags had clean, rectangular lines and were made from shiny, smooth, structured leather. Valentino used a chain strap on the handbags that is constructed much like the chain on Chanel's 2.55 where it can be worn as a single strap or double strap. As a single strap, Valentino's shoulder bags drop to the middle of the hip bone. Worn as a double strap, Valentino's shoulder bags will hit at the bottom of the rib cage. Valentino used small studded details on his medium sized shoulder bags and a double closure detail on his small shoulder bags. The shoulder bags that Valentino created were slightly dressy and could pass for the office or daytime special event. There was also a small, soft leather clutch on Valentino's runway during Paris Fashion Week which featured small studs. The clutch was perfect for daytime looks and fit right into the current small, daytime clutch trend Fashionistas have seen coming off of the New York, Milan, London and Paris runways. Valentino also created a casual, daytime hobo with small studded detail. Valentino's hobo fits right into the soft hobo trend for spring and also has a slight edge making it appropriate for understated, rocker chic looks; another runway trend for spring 2011. The hobo featured two, thin straps and could be worn on the shoulder or forearm. When worn on the shoulder, the top of the hobo bag would hit at the bottom of the rib cage. Valentino created a clean, classic and fashion forward handbag collection for spring and summer 2011 that fits right into the current trends from New York, Milan, London and Paris. The collection is large and will be highly coveted for spring and summer by Fashionistas everywhere.
